It is that time of year, time
for boots, sweaters and cute hats. Time to drink tea or hot cocoa by a
fire cuddled up under a blanket. The leaves on the trees are beginning to
change from a deep green to vibrant shades of yellow, orange and red. Every
time you step outside you can't help but kick leaves up as you walk. No matter
where you go there always seems to be something pumpkin flavored. The pumpkin
spice latte has returned to Starbucks finally! Homes are filled with the scent
of cinnamon and apple candles. Change is in the air, and not only can you see
it but you can feel it with every gust of cool air. You can go apple picking
and to the pumpkin patch and play in piles of leaves.
George Eliot
once said "Delicious Autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I was a
bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive Autumns."
If you haven't noticed
already, I absolutely love Autumn and everything about it. I like calling it
Autumn over Fall. I think Autumn is a prettier word :) It wins my favorite
season by a landslide. In my eyes it is the most beautiful and calming and
serene season. If I could I would seek successive Autumns, I could forever live
in Autumn. It is a season of change, a season of peace, a season of laughter, a
season of love. I find the changes of Autumn completely mesmerizing. I could
get lost just walking around on an Autumn day looking at the changing colors,
watching the leaves stir in the wind, and seeing the smiles on peoples face as
they take in beautiful weather. Another favorite thing of mine about autumn, is
watching children play in the gorgeous weather. I was babysitting the other
weekend and we did just this. We went on a walk around the neighborhood as the
3 year old pointed out every red tree that he saw. The kids raked all the
leaves into a big pile, only to throw them, along with a lot of dirt, on me. I,
naturally being a child a heart, joined in on the action of throwing leaves back
at them. There was a full out leaf fight.
Autumn is a
season of change. More so than any other season I believe. One thing that I truly
admire about Autumn is that it makes change look so beautiful and graceful.
Look at the trees for instance. In a few short months they go from being full
of deep green leaves and full of live, to basically bare and empty. In other
words, they temporarily die. What amazes me is how that process of withering
away can be so beautiful. The leaves could just turn brown and fall off, but
instead they give us a beautiful landscape of orange, red, green, brown and
yellow. I think all change can be beautiful no matter how hard it is. You just
have to choose to see it as beautiful.
Kahdalea in the Fall! How Beautiful!!!!
So, what is my advice for you the Autumn? Go outside, and take in the
beauty that surrounds you. Surround yourself with friends and family and feel
the warmth of those relationships that fill your heart. Drink hot tea. Light an
amazing smelling fall candle, and let the aroma fill your home. Play in the
leaves. Have a fall photo shoot. Read a good book, one that you want to read,
not one that you have to read. Take a camping trip. Go on a long walk. Go out
of your way to step on that leaf that looks extra crunchy (I am guilty of this
one). Slow down, take a deep breath and live in the moment.
P.S.- I’m one of those people who listen to music
depending on the weather or my mood, and this Autumn, this playlist has been
playing constantly in my room, on my phone and in my car. Listen to it, it is
amazing!
P.P.S- I just started reading Travels with
Charley: In Search of America, by John Steinbeck, and he spoke of autumn
saying “I can’t even imagine the forest colors when I am not seeing them. I
wondered whether constant association could cause inattention, and asked a
native New Hampshire woman about it. She said the autumn never fails to amaze
her; to elate. ‘It is a glory,’ she said, ‘and can’t be remembered, so that it
always comes as a surprise.’ ”
